There are several different factors that effect the performance of a computer. The CPU is the "brain" of the computer. Sometimes referred to simply as the central processing unit ,but more commonly called processor, the CPU is where most calculations take place. In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important element of a computer system. The RAM or memory is RAM or Random Access Memory, provides space for your computer to read and write data to be accessed by the CPU (central processing unit). When people refer to a computer's memory, they usually mean its RAM. If you add more RAM to your computer, you reduce the number of times your CPU must read data from your hard disk. This usually allows your computer to work considerably faster, as RAM is many times faster than a hard disk. Random access memory (RAM) is the best known form of computer memory. RAM is considered "random access" because you can access any memory cell directly if you know the row and column that intersect at that cell. The hard disk drive is the main, and usually largest, data storage device in a computer. The operating system, software titles and most other files are stored in the hard disk drive. The hard drive is sometimes referred to as the "C: drive" due to the fact that Microsoft Windows designates the "C" drive letter to the primary partition on the primary hard drive in a computer by default. While this is not a very technically correct term to use, it is still common. For example, some computers have multiple drive letters (i.e. C, D, E) representing areas across one or more hard drives. The Hard Disk Drive is Also Known As: HDD (abbreviation), hard drive, hard disk, fixed drive, fixed disk or fixed disk drive. There was a time when the performance of hard disks was one of the most underrated aspects of overall system performance. Hard disks were considered only "a place to keep stuff" and little heed given to how they affected the operation of the PC as a whole. Over the last few years this has changed dramatically, and hard disk performance issues are now getting the attention they deserve. |
